Experience Europe’s only coffee plantation in Agaete

On the La Laja plantation outside the small town of Agaete in the northwest of Gran Canaria you can visit and experience the plantation itself or as part of a journey. Here you can be shown around and told how the coffee is grown. Among other things, you learn that the coffee boxes are grown in the shade under tall vines since they need heat and shade. You can get a taste of authentic coffee, bananas and self-made wine. Due to the warm climate, tropical fruits are also grown here, such as mango, avocado and papaya.

Local farmer Victor Jorge is the fifth generation to work on producing coffee, and is rightly proud of his product because of its exceptionally high quality. With its fame spreading, the plantation now attracts both local and international tourists from around the world. Santa Ana Cathedral in Las Palmas

Santa Ana Cathedral in Las Palmas
The Santa Ana Cathedral from 1497 is beautiful and worth a visit. It is the oldest and largest church in Gran Canaria. The construction of the church began in 1497, shortly after Spain’s conquest of the islands in 1478. It took almost 400 years before the church was completed and made it a mixture of different architectural styles. The cathedral is wooded with side caps. The classic west front was built according to plans by the architect and sculptor Luján Pérez, who has also left for many of the cathedral sculptures, including the 12 apostles under the dome and the sculpture “La Dolorosa” (the pain) in the side chapels.

Western Parks Sioux City in San Agustin

    Sioux Western Park
In San Agustin on Gran Canaria you will find the western park Sioux City. The Western City was built in 1972 for recordings of western films. It cost staggering $ 15 million to build Sioux City! Today, there are about 100 inhabitants in the western park. After the western movie industry stopped, Sioux City has gradually become an amusement park for the whole family. In addition to exhilarating western show and horseback riding through Sioux City, it is the own playland for the smallest. Westernparken has its own reptile department with different types of snakes, spiders and a world-famous white crocodile.

Cowboys, Indians and Sheriffs wander street long. Around a street corner we saw gunpowder and shotguns. We were imprisoned and “locked in” in a weird and dark cell with a footrest on the foot. We were dressed as bandits and wanted big posters with the promise of high bounties. For a moment, I felt I was in a western movie.

The highlight of the evening was the amazing Western show! There was speed and excitement from the first minute. Galloping horses and aggressive bulls almost thundered through the streets and across the square where the show was taking place. Fillings and thieves were chased by sheriffs. Acrobatic Indians impressed with flame shutdown and swarm casting. It was a wonderful mix of drama and humor! The show was a “live show” of a true western movie!

    Guide to Maspalomas

    Maspalomas

Maspalomas is a tourist town in the south of the island of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, stretching from Bahía Feliz in the east to Meloneras in the west, including the resort towns of San Agustín and Playa del Inglés. Maspalomas constitutes the southernmost part of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and of the island.

Before the era of tourism, Maspalomas was the name of a hamlet in what today is San Fernando de Maspalomas. Its name may derive from that of Rodrigo Mas de Palomar, a settler and soldier from Majorca, or from Francisco Palomar, a Genoese friend of Alonso Fernandez de Lugo who purchased 87 Guanche slaves from Güímar and settled in the area.

Present-day Maspalomas is the result of an ambitious development project, organized in the form of an International Ideas Contest (opened to any member of the International Union of Architects), held in 1961 under the auspice of Alejandro del Castillo, owner and promoter of most of the space under construction. The contest was won by the French office SETAP (including the urbanist Guy Lagneau and the economist Michel Weill) and covered the 1,060 hectares (2,600 acres) and 19 kilometres (12 mi) of coast that constitute the core area of Maspalomas – Costa Canaria. The contest paved the way for a particular way of understanding “touristic” urbanism that served as model for later tourists developments in other Canary Islands.

    Maspalomas Travel VIDEO

Unlike the resort-like development model later extended to other locations in the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, Maspalomas has a personality on its own, as it evolved into a fully equipped town much closer to the “touristic” concept of destinations. It has a variety of infrastructure and public institutions rarely seen in other touristic areas, including private clinics and two hospitals, local and foreign schooling institutions (Spanish, English and Swedish schools), shopping & convention centres, two casinos, English-language cinema, golf courses, sports centers, thematic parks and a Summer University (in collaboration with the university of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, mainly focused on tourism-related activities).

Maspalomas serves as the base for Gran Canaria’s only English language newspaper, which serves a print readership in excess of 20,000 every month and reaches up to another 30,000 readers on-line.

It has a wide range of accommodation on offer, although the urbanism concept speaks of an horizontal expansion (Bungalows) rather than high rises.

The area includes the Natural Reserve of the Dunes of Maspalomas, which constitutes an important landmark of Gran Canaria. Much appreciated as a winter destination for foreign tourists, mostly from north-European countries (Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, etc.), it remains as the largest tourist destination in the Canary Islands and a worldwide-known destination for LGBT tourism.

There is a 56-metre-high (184 ft) lighthouse, named El Faro de Maspalomas, at the southern point of the resort from where the 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) long beach and Maspalomas Dunes, a nature reserve since 1897, lead to Playa del Inglés.

    Maspalomas Dunes

Maspalomas Dunes it’s a 404-hectare (1,000-acre) area of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, they have been protected as a nature reserve since 1897. They were one of the contenders in the 12 Treasures of Spain competition.

They were formed by sand from the bottom of the ocean, during the last ice age, when the wind blew the sand towards the coast of the island.

Maspalomas Dunes it’s a set of dunes with characteristic of the Canarian archipelago, unique in the island of Gran Canaria, since there is no other dune system of the same characteristics in the island. Most of the flora and some of the ornithological species that visit the humid areas (Oasis of Maspalomas) of this reserve, are protected by national and regional laws. In addition, there are abundant species of insect sabulícolas, including some endemic, related to African fauna, which are only known in this environment, the Gran Canaria Giant Lizard (Gallotia stehlini) that can be sighted abundantly in the area of the palm grove Near the Oasis of Maspalomas and a large number of birds.

The special natural reserve of the Dunes of Maspalomas has a climate with very little precipitation and warm temperatures. The average annual temperature is 23.5ºC, 21ºC in winter and 30ºC in summer on average. The nights are warm.

The rainfall is very scarce, its annual average is less than 100mm (approximately 80.2mm). It only rains about 10 or 15 days a year, concentrating on the months of February and November. An average of 259 sunny days a year is calculated, 87 with clouds and only 13 days totaly covered.

    El Faro de Maspalomas

    Lighthouse of Maspalomas
The lighthouse of Maspalomas is a lighthouse located on the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) which is responsible for marking the coast of the south of the island, in the strip of coast that covers the area covered by the lighthouse Of Punta de Arinaga, to the northeast, and the lighthouse of Punta del Castillete, located to the northwest.

This lighthouse is a construction conceived by the engineer Juan León y Castillo as a luminous ensemble constituted by two main bodies, the house of the torrero and the tower. The house, of rectangular plan, was developed from a traditional idea as it is the canary patio, but the four façades of the property are aided by the eclectic fashion of the period in which it was constructed.

The decision to build a lighthouse in Maspalomas dates from 1861 but it is not until 1884 that Juan de León and Castillo are commissioned to draft the project. The works lasted until 1889 and the lighthouse emitted its first luminous flash in the night of its putting in operation, 1 of February of 1890.

The profile of Maspalomas Lighthouse is very characteristic and is integrated in the new tourist resort of Meloneras that is nearby and can be distinguished from other places in the south of Gran Canaria such as Campo Internacional or Playa del Inglés. The silhouette of the lighthouse and the Dunes of Maspalomas constitute a unique icon that serves to recognize the Maspalomas Costa Canaria brand worldwide as a unique tourist destination.

The Maspalomas Lighthouse has been declared in 2005 by the Government of the Canary Islands, of Cultural Interest in the category of Historical Monument. Its protection area is 5225.72 square meters along a perimeter of 318.15 linear meters.
